'Owning the disease': comment on EMDT article

21 May, 2014

An article in EMDT (European Medical Device Technology) suggests that 'traditional medtech companies are increasingly turning to more integrated business models that focus on delivering services and solutions across the continuum of care.' This is a great summary of an emerging trend we are seeing across the industry – implications that benefit both patients and business.

Owning-your-disease

‘Own the disease’ business models are viable owing to a shift towards integrated health care provision.

Historically the rhetoric surrounding integrated health care has been more akin to a utopian scenario, and it didn’t stand up to the commercial realities and structure of the sector. However today ‘own the disease’ business models are viable owing to a shift towards integrated health care provision. It is the cost containment agenda underpinning this shift that will allow the model to flourish.

Cost containment is shaping policy that directly impacts healthcare payers, who in turn are driving healthcare providers to deliver cost effective integrated healthcare, thus creating opportunities and markets for products and services that ‘own the disease’.
