Microbiome: an emerging integral part of precision medicine and personalised lifestyle changes

A decade has gone by since Science magazine named the microbiome as one of its breakthroughs of the year. Four years later, in 2015, the science editor of the Financial Times described it as ‘the greatest advance in scientific understanding of the human body this century’.
With each passing year, the potential of the microbiome in applications ranging from basic dietary advice to the most sophisticated precision medicine is becoming clearer.
We are starting to see tantalising glimpses of a near future in which diagnostic procedures and microbiota interventions will transform the consumerisation of personalised healthcare.
